The University reaches out to engage & connect the local creative industry.

An interdisciplinary, multi-genre, audio-visual concert is presented by the School of Creative Arts and CIRIC - the University of Newcastle’s Creative Industries Research and Innovation Cluster.

Get acquainted with Newcastle’s visual art and music fraternity at this special concert event staged at the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music’s Harold Lobb Hall on the 13th AUG at 7pm.

Partly a response to the continued development of the University's Creative Arts’ programmes in Fine Art, Music & Creative and Performing Arts. The concert hopes to ultimately facilitate collaborative interdisciplinary opportunities for the community as well as solidify existing connections within the current local creative industry.

Head of the School of Creative Arts, Frank Milward’s personal academic exploration into the intersection between fine art, music, theatre making, and how technology can culturally enrich the arts, has been influential on the exciting new directions of the School. As a reflection of this, the concert presents an intriguing & unique mix of performers including contemporary dancers, classical pianists & digital projectionists.

‘What we are doing is presenting traditional forms but in different kinds of mediated forms. We are placing them within a digital context.’

The benefits of this movement towards inclusive cross-medium collaboration stretch out further than just the creative industries. Milward says strengthening these kinds of relationships can be pivotal to the development of Newcastle as a city.

‘We seek to incorporate creative elements that going to be of benefit both educationally & within a business context’

Milward says this benefit is tied to the idea of place.

‘Once we begin to understand Newcastle as a destination or place then we can begin to see what the creative industries can do to create interest & draw people in.’

By exploring the creative industries’ place is within this economic sphere it is hoped that an understanding of the cultural importance of the Arts in Newcastle can be conveyed.

This boundary pushing concert, a special treat for Newcastle audiences, will include high caliber performances from visiting international artists as well as current staff & students.

Sally May, international pianist and champion of Australian music, will perform alongside international dancer Rhiannon Newtown & jazz pianist Ray Alldridge. Frank Milward will also perform, as will projectionists Tim Buchanan & Gavin Beck. A highlight not to miss will be local favourites Voices of Echology.

The concert will also host interactive networking elements to encourage the audience to develop their own connections.

The show is an open invitation to people that are interested in & who work within the broad context of the creative industries, the creative economy, the cultural economy & those who are innovators & supporters.

This event is supported by the University of Newcastle’s Creative Industries Research and Innovation Cluster, Newcastle City Council, Newcastle Now, The Follower Newspaper and Catapult Dance.
